Why did the Wii sell?
It removed a lot of the barriers that modern consoles had built up agaist new users, as well as excited people with the potential brought about by its motion controls. The software was a huge driving factor, from Wii Sports to the first 2D Mario on a console in 20 years.

It didn't take down barriers. It devolved the product. It made it less intuitive and more fun. The simpler the product the larger your possible demographic. Sony and Microsoft had the core market under heavy lockdown and Nintendo decided since we cant beat them go after the non-gamers.
Now you're either missing the mark completely, or vastly oversimplifying things.
Thats exactly what the Wii did. It oversimplified things. Thats the point I am trying to get accross to you. This is the way of the world from pop music to commercial art to even videogames. The simpler you make the product or in art terms what is known as Kitsch the wider your demographics will become. Sony and Microsoft's way of gaming seems to have hit a ceiling after the PS2 era and Nintendo went after people who don't game. Sony started doing it a year before but they never targeted non-gamers even though the first Eyetoy profited enough to have a second iteration.
