They're really not that similar other than working on the DKC games.
Rare supplied like half of Nintendo's output during the N64 days and tilted the 16-bit war in Nintendo's favor late in the gen.
Retro is a one team studio that works on one game at a time, generally all established Nintendo properties. And commercially anyway, making a new DKC probably makes more sense than a Metroid game ... DKCR outsold all three Prime games combined.
