I think the missing feature is direct (and private) messages to other users.

Pretty obvious reasons behind this, they don't want the same paedo group who were pestering kids on swapnote to be able to private msg anyone on here. Keeping it all public means that people who browse through things can quickly report posts that a child might not immediately realize are very dangerous. (basically a miiverse drawing of a candy van)
