Maybe it is because people like their franchises and they find them fun that they re-invest in them again and again. Maybe it is also because Nintendo puts a lot of focus and polish into the actual gameplay itself. Why would you through perfectly goods IPs (be they characters or gameplay styles) away, especially ones that play a major role in the entire gaming culture, just because your competitors are doing something different. By the way Nintendo has released a new IP and re-imaginations on the gameplay of existing IP in almost ever generation, many of which have reasonated well with gamers, just because you do not like them does not make the company a bad game developer.

oh yes it does because, no matter how much you polish them and how many people like them or not, if you still (have to) rely/depend on mario and zelda, after about 30 years as a gaming developer, you're pretty damn pathetic.

Actually there is a lot of justification to Nintendo using their big name franchises because they tend add lots of new elements to each release (with the exception of an obvious few). Also, while Mario and Zelda games do sell quite well and Mario is Nintendo's mascot, Nintendo does have plenty of other franchises that they utilize (at varying levels): there is kid Icarus, Star Fox, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, the Wii series of games, F-zero, Kirby, Donkey Kong, and many more; not to mention the many games they have made that utilize their popular characters but have completely different gameplay styles like the Smash Bros series, Paper Mario, the WarioWare titles, along with others. Nintendo makes a lot more than you give them credit for and they put a lot of effort into their titles and they have a large variety of gameplay styles and franchises, which makes them an execellent developer in my books  and a developer with one of the greatest variety of games.  

guess we all know that mario is nintendos mascot because they're doing everything to shove him down our throats with every generation of console or handheld they make. but do you know what happens if you do that to that extent like nintendo does? people begin to either

a) hate you for doing that to the thing you once loved and/or

b) start to don't care about you anymore

depends on how much you liked their games before. and that's what happening to nintendo for a while now. with every year going by they're losing more and more people who once cared about their products. and the next generation of young people can't be thrilled either because mario is nothing special anymore if you oversaturate the market like that. so if you fail to create some other trademark that a lot of people get excited for (and i'm sorry but none of you've listed is on the same level as mario and zelda) and your biggest ones are going down, you're goinig down with them. but the good thing is that in the future (let's be positive and say another 30 years) no one needs to be upset about someone like jason ruben anymore because the only thing you will hear when you ask people about nintendo in is: "Nintendo... who?"
