They were very much in touch with the Wii, hence it breaking the 100 million barrier.


With the casual audience, but torok's point has some merit to it, the N64 was really their last console to have a reasonable level of success with hardcore gamers. 

In part I think once MS entered the business and the GameCube sold even less than the N64, Nintendo pulled back and became afraid to compete for this audience I suspect.
