How well did software drive the GameCube? If narrowly avoiding complete irrelevancy is Nintendo's goal, then yeah it will work.
Compelling software in theory will drive hardware sales, but only when consumers find a particular piece of hardware appealing to begin with. Nintendo still hasn't given the majority of consumers a reason why Wii U should appeal to them.
