I don't like Crabmaster2000's commercialism but I do appreciate his honesty. I would argue that although his profiteering is repugnant to me it should be tolerated in small amounts. So his one banner is annoying but not outrageous.
I would feel even better if it was just a text link with a description above it saying "Click here to sign up to win xxxx" or whatever.
But Crabmaster2000, please don't equate for-profit linking/ads with non-profit linking/ads. They're not equivalent and half of why people are angry at you is probably due to your claims that they are.
