The Playstation 3 is dead in Japan. It's a miracle it moved as much software as the PSP did. It tells us that the attach rate is there, and there's potential for the PS3 to be a software moving platform.

I have to disagree with you here mate. On the attach ratio stuff. NeoGaf uses the Famitsu and Media Create releases as well as the end year top 500 releases etc to help the community keep track of Japanese game sales and attach rates. This information is updated on a regular basis. You can view it here but I will include the data below for easy viewing.

Sony PS3:

Hardware = 1,900,664 Through Feb 17/08 (MC)
Tie Ratio = 2.02

Now its not that a 2 game attach ratio is horrible. Its for sure bad, but not horrible itself. Its HORRIBLE because of how low the hardware sales are for the PS3. With the system being out as long as it has, and having a userbase so low, it should be easier for it to maintain a HIGHER attach ratio. Its when your hardware is flying out of the doors at record speed that the software has trouble keeping up attach rate wise. Thats why towards the end of a gen when hardware sales are slowing down, you always see the attach rates for said console start to climb very very swiftly.

For comparison here is the 360's attach rate for Japan:

Microsoft X360:

Hardware = 584,034 through Feb 10/08
Tie Ratio = 4.07 (See note at bottom)

Small userbase but the attach rate is easy to keep high because of it, lots more software sold weekly than hardware easily.

 so you are comparing the total software sales from two consoles. One wich have been in the market for  two years and other for one year.

 so tell us the software sales for the last year and try again...
