I'm his age and from his generation and I agree. Anyone over 30 has a mental skill set that the early 20 somethings, teenagers and kids will never have. We didn't HAVE walk throughs, the internet, super guides or anything else. Most of our games gave a set number of lives, or continues, and if you lost them, that it...you're done. Can you imagine an 8 year old who's only ever seen an Xbox or Wii-U having to play Contra without the Konami code? Imagine forcing him or her to get to stage four before quitting. You'd see a total break down and they'd likely just give up crying.

Having said all that...there's nothing we can do. Games have gotten soft and gamers have as well. Times change, and that's just reality. There's still hard games out there, but they aren't Nintendo games. I guess that's what I'd tell Mike if I were talking to him. I'd say "If you hate easy games, why are you playing modern Mario?".

The difficulty in games actually still remain, but in a different area altogether.

Single player games are no longer what they used to be. SP has become the mode that people go to relax without having to overcome any hurdles. That's why you see all these crutches and options that essentially beat the game for you.

The real difficulty now is in the Multiplayer aspect of games where you are put up against the world and you learn through getting your a$$ beat. I remember when I first got Call of Duty MW2 (my first COD), I went online thinking I'll be able to beast, but I got my candy backside whooped so hard I had to call for mama. If I even got 1 kill and 10 deaths a game, I would be so happy. Eventually after practicing over and over, learning how to aim, understanding the maps and strategies, now I can pretty much decimate all the noobs that come online to play FPS.  MP is like the old days where you have to get abused to get better. Only difference here is that you are being owned by other human beings rather than AI.

That's a great observation!! Never thought of it that way, but it's true. Although, I don't know how long it's going to continue. For instance, COD4? It made FPS alot easier for people than Halo 3. We went from having to shoot people in the head over and over again while they jumped 20 feet, dodged and their shields dropped to being able to drop someone with 3 bullets aimed at their feet lol. There's also the whole grinding aspect to COD where anyone can slowly get better guns and armor. In Halo, you use to have to memorize the weapon locations, get to them, and then know how to use them. One you died, they were gone and you had default weapons.

Hopefully it doesn't get too bad, but if there's a way for devs and companies to lessen the barrier, they will. There's more money to be made that way. People like to win. Winning is fun. Very few of us can handle losing for a month straight before getting good at a game.
