I considered that, but how much money is Nintendo really making on an underperfoming console? I have yet to see any data that seperates GCN figures from GBA and DS, so I really don't know. I'm sure it turned a profit, but other than the Wii, every successive home console sales get worse, and third parties drift further and further away. When the goal right now is to outdo GameCube numbers, then something's gotta change.
You also have to consider inherent benefits in producing only one machine. R&D costs for one machine instead of two. Ridiculous marketshare due to being the most flexible gaming device out there (if it were to really take off), and customers are pleased they don't have to spend money on a home console and portable. Developers have to familiarize themselves and focus on one set of hardware instead of two. Tons more software because first party studios aren't being spread thin across different devices (and teams could more readily share talent and resources because they're all readily familiar with the same SDKs).
Is it worth sacrificing the seperate lines of profit from one asskicking handheld and one struggling console for all of that? You have to at least consider it.
