I think 2014 is the decider for the Wii U. If MK8, Smash Bros, X Donkey Kong, Yarn Yoshi, Bayonetta and other first party titles don't make a difference then it's game over for sure. It has to be said that the first 3 franchises have grown a lot since the GC era so I'll be surprised if it doesn't influence the Wii U a lot. 2013 is a year to forget though, they really cocked it up with only SM3D World as a big release. The Wii series is dead :/

They grew a lot because of the Wii series. If it's "dead" as you say, then a lot of that audience is gone.

They came for Wii Sports/Fit, getting Mario/Smash/Mario Kart was like ordering desert after the main course at a restaurant famous for its deserts.

But if the main course is gone, people aren't going to come just for desert. That's sorta the problem Nintendo has if the Wii ____ series can't bring back casuals en masse.

Things like Bayonetta and Yarn Yoshi realistically aren't moving mass amounts of hardware either lets be honest. They're just next year's sales equivalents to Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3.

Mario KArt was no desert. It's grown, I'm not saying it will sell 20 million but it does have a lot of fans and this next iteration looks brilliant. It will do more than 7 million (Double Dash numbers) and push more consoles. You have a good point on the other games though I admit, but surely there are some people who go back to a restaurant for the desert no? :P 30 million + copies of Mario KArt Wii is nothing to sniff at!
