Nintendo needs to go back to their more simplistic, arcadey roots, with cheaper hardware. This is the direction they went in with the Wii, and look at the success it achieved. Nintendo since then has gone back to their more niche Gamecube style of games, hence the poor, Gamecube style sales..

People keep saying Nintendo is releasing more Gamecube-esque games but im not so sure about that. Lets look at the Nintendo developed games out and coming.

Nintendo Land-this definitely fits in more with the Wii style games

New Super Mario Bros U-sequel to a Wii game, Gamecube never had a 2D Mario

Game & Wario-another minigame compilation, fits in more as a Wii title

New Super Luigi U-expansion to NSMBU so more similar to Wii

Pikmin 3-sequel to a Gamecube game

Wind Waker HD-remake of a Gamecube game

Wii Party U-sequel to a Wii game

Wii Fit U-sequel to a Wii game

Wii Sports Club-updated remake of a Wii game

Super Mario 3D World-to me this game is what happens when Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros Wii fuck and have a baby so I would say it fits in more with Wii

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze-sequel to a Wii game, Gamecube never had a true Donkey Kong game

Mario Kart 8-fits in with both

Super Smash Bros U-fits in with both

Yarn Yoshi-spiritual successor to Kirby Epic Yarn, a Wii game

X-spiritual successor to Xenoblade Chronicles, a Wii game

So I dont believe the problem is the type of games they are releasing. In my opinion the three major issues were the drought, price and marketing and they are starting to fix those problems but its going to take time after having such a horrible 3/4 of the year. If Wii Fit U, Pikmin, Wonderful 101, Rayman werent all delayed then Wii U could have had a solid exclusive each month in the first half of the year.

January-Wii Fit U

February-Rayman Legends

March-Lego City Undercover

April-Pikmin 3

May-Wonderful 101

June-Game & Wario

July-New Super Luigi U

Aug-Wind Waker HD

Sept-Sonic Lost World

Oct-Wii Party U

Nov-Super Mario 3D World

Dec-Mario & Sonic Olympics

If the release schedule looked like this along with only the Deluxe bundle at $299 from the get go and decent advertising throughout the year then I stronly believe Wii U would have had a solid year, not Wii level but they could have met there sales goals.
