The Wii lasted a full six years on the market before its successor arrived but the console was a barren wasteland for its last two years regarding support.  Nintendo basically cut its jugular in 2011 and neither Skyward Sword nor the "project rainfall" games (which were completely botched as far as NA localization) were sufficient band-aids.  Nintendo was stupid to treat such a successful console in that manner.

The one silver lining (we hoped) was that this would at least result in the WiiU hitting the ground running with a veritable barrage of killer 1st party software in its first few months but we all know how that turned out.

Regarding the OP, however, the only thing stupider than how Nintendo has handled the WiiU so far would be if they just dropped support for it now.

Which, again, was kinda par for the course with Nintendo consoles.  They always go out with a wimper.  My last year or two with the Gamecube was about as eventful as my last year or so with the Wii.  N64, if memory serves, was worse.  Aside from that little tidbit (which I may be wrong about), I guess I can't really argue with anything you posted.  I was satisfied with the Project Rainfall/Zelda game, though.

@bold:  Well, that's not entirely true.  You're right about the N64 and Gamecube, but look at the difference in success between them and the Wii.  If you look at the NES' fifth year on the market (the year before its successor launched), it was getting 1st party games like Dr Mario, Star Tropics and the game that went on to be the single biggest stand-alone seller on the console, Super Mario Bros 3.  The SNES also had an amazing 1st party lineup the year before its successor released with Earthbound, DKC2, Killer Instinct and SMW2 Yoshi's Island.

Now it's true that the difference in support from 3rd parties between NES/SNES and the Wii in their later years was night and day, and that's where Nintendo seemed to cave regarding the Wii which was foolish IMO.  They were the ones who made the Wii a success to start with and they could have had it go out with a bang instead of a whimper.  Can you imagine in late 2011 or 2012 if the Wii had gotten a Wii Sports 3 or if NSMBU had just been a Wii game instead?  Not to mention if the Wii had seen a Starfox, Pikmin and F-Zero; I would wager that with this kind of support the console would be finishing close to 110m sold (maybe), and the WiiU may have been able to release much stronger a year later in 2013.
