No, this is giving them undue credit. They didn't "weigh" anything, they simply overquantified nitpicks as a justification to give the game a lower score than it actually deserved. Considering the next lowest score out of all the reviews on the internet was a 9.0, I would have to disagree with you.
Gamespot is well aware of "AAA" status being 9.0 and up. Lately, they review based on a .5 scale, so an 8.5 is basically saying, this game is good for fans, but it's not a killer app AAA title, it's just a good game, but nothing to brag about.
