Hardware without software is a box. This has little impact on the topic at hand, i.e. whether the Gamepad benefits or detracts from the console. I maintain though that the Gamepad repels more people than it attracts, and that the situation (sales, but tangentially also software) is not going to improve anytime soon.

Don't worry too much about it. By this time next year almost everyone will have realized that the Wii U's problems go beyond lack of software and a too high price. By then people should be ready to acknowledge that the Gamepad is one of the worst decisions in Nintendo history.

As for my purely personal opinion, I am still disgusted by the Gamepad. It's a controller that was made to enable the porting of crappy games and I have no desire to play crappy games. So the way I see it, Nintendo tossed out the good to bring in the bad. The Wii U is like the Green Bay Packers firing Aaron Rodgers and getting Blaine Gabbert on board, all the while thinking that it is a genius move.
