Added natures, added more diversion, new story, gave moves a special vs physical subset, added a shitload of pokemon, crafted new game strategies with the introduction of weather and various other team sets, added double battles and other things.Further refined past pokemon. Moved the story to a typical RPG save the world kinda plot. Gen 4 Diamond &Pearl Pokemon trying to adapt to the modern age. Arguably not fully realized until Gen 6. The series story takes a move towards moral ambiguity while still keeping the whole save the world shiz ,new region,new pokemon yadda yadda more refining of the metagame, adds even more shit to do Now when it comes to Pokemon I will not count the remakes. Most people buy this for nostalgia,evolution of the engine that gamefreak put out for that particular genre, or the content. Which is always very high and in excess. Fleshes out more ofthe series lore Gen 5 Black and White
Full on moral dilemma plot, more meta game and breeding mechanics refinement, new region new pokemon, further emphasis on local connectivity introduced and new things to do. Besides Gen 3(due to the whole not being able to trade thing, which is what largely gave birth to the push and concept of Pokemon remakes the sales legs this series see the most tepid response despite the launch records previously broken. Adds,triple, rotation battles. Gen 6 The humdinger motherload of series enhancements. Content overload, gamefreak redoes the whole system from scratch, the experience as a whole feels genuinely "new" to people. I think its their eyes playing with them lol. Addition of fairy types, mega evolutions, new moves, refines various pre-existing pokemon, movesets, streamlines the breeding process for the competitive games. New stuff, even more diversions. The online in the game is superb. Pretty much the wet dream of any competitive/casual fan of Pokemon ,makes the need for a Pokemon MMO defunct. Adds a new concept in inverse battles. The story is based around norse mythos and various other things that clip it out and refines the series dialogue among other things.
People either get one or two of the first versions or they wait for the 3rd version, the only other instance of this is for BW2. Which many bought either because they never had the first, the wanted to play the whole sequel thing, or for the competitive features. Mainly this is from a more content standpoint.
A large part of pokemon not getting stale is due to the sense of adventure the games give. They throw you in a whole new region with different lore and goals and diversions. Diversions play a big role when it comes to remakes as well. Its literally because they stuff the games with content as to why the core players buy them again. Its pretty much DLC. And you know everyone's a hypocrite when it comes to DLC. So depending on where you jumped in it dictates how much change is "enough" for you. Also why people have wildly differing opinions on other such things. The games are always full on content, so people get what they will. Due to the frequency in how oft it comes out as of late ( due to remakes/gen 5 being short) naturally has had some effect on the series,despite the content you get out of them.
