I got the game when i t released and I seem to recall people being satisfied with the ambiguous ending months before the DLC ever released. I think the ending was the ending. This wasn't a case like Azura's Wrath where you didn't get "The true ending". I liked bith DLCs and American Nightmare but I never felt they were vital. I actually think it was DLC done right--extending the experience with bonus stuff for those that wanted it.
