60fps is much more important than 1080p. 720p to 1080p isn't a big difference unless you sit too close or have a ginormous screen. 30fps to 60fps on a fast paced game, however, is much more noticeable.
Sonic Team made the right choice here.

Is the difference between 1080p and 720p not that noticeable on a TV? Because on a PC playing a game in 720p is like having my eyes slowly cut out ¬_¬ (that's a serious question by the way, all the games I've played on a console have been 720p so i have no way to compare).

This is something i have noticed; when watching tv, the difference between 720p and 1080p is just so miniscule. In fact i'm not sure i can really tell the difference.

But when i play games on my pc and turn the res down to 720p, it looks like shit compared to 1080p, so a huge difference.
