A darker approach would actually appeal more to teenagers than over 20s, who are less concerned with wanting to feel "grown up.

Are you kidding me? The equivalent of a rated "E" game is "G" for movies. It means open to all ages with children as well. 17+ means is the target age group rating youre talking about which aims for 17+ and above.
