The point of tracking predictions when the results won't be forthcoming for years...what is the point?

I mean, a game can't sell less than it already has, it can only sell more. Those with low expectations can get proven wrong quickly if the game does well, but if it does poorly, then by the time those with high expectations are proven wrong, no one will care. Having no other criteria besides "lifetime" just favors those with unrealistic expectations...
