Considering how long he's been tied up in these franchises, I can certainly understand his willingness to pass the torch. I just question whether the right people have the job now.
The Mario-side seems relatively fine, but the last SS did a lot to convince me that the person behind Zelda really knew what they were doing. It was one step forward, two steps back, and I worry that they might have gotten the wrong idea about the actual problems with the game.
