Did they though? Except for hardcore Nintendo fans and retail stores pushing the "buy one or it will sell out" line, most other gamers were non plussed about the launch and in forums there was certainly this apathetic feeling about the product.
If Sony is to be believed (and its difficult after hearing this from multiple companies in the past)...Sony is looking like they will have more stock available on day 1 and that most of it is already sold to customers, then that is certainly a good springboard. We all know what happened to the wii-u after Christmas, and that could happen with the PS4/XbO. But with Japan launch in Feb that will boost the numbers a bit if they are starting to drop.
I do find all this fascinating, and it will be interesting to watch.
