When it was released in 2003, Nintendo said it was a first person adventure and not an FPS.  With Metroid Prime 2, they tried to draw attention from Halo, though.  They had some crazy internet ad campaign.

A game is the sum of all its parts, especially those that are more frequently used.  So regardless what the games genre is called, any gameplay in the game that is frequently used deserves critique.
