Now my only issue is why they don't bundle this with a dualshock 4? WIth its touchpad it could be 100% compatible with all Vita games. R2 could alternate between front and rear facing and gyroscope function would be intact.

Because lots of people already have a Dual Shock 4 around the house (several of them in many cases), why force a higher price point for people who don't need a new controller?

It would still be compatible with the DS3, but the bundle they announced should come with a DS4, not 3.

Are there really even that many games that use the rear touch pad? This device is aimed at budget families and the Apple TV/Roku crowd, Sony probably has a ton of DS3 inventory they'd be happy to get rid of. Why not.

Could someone explain to me why a family on a budget would get this over a PS3 16GB which will probably see a price drop in 2014 or 2015 when this thing is finally on the market in North America and Europe?  Or what about families on a budget that already own a PS3, how would you sell this device to them if they didn't seem interested in Vita games and aren't planning on getting a PS4 for a few years?

Don't get me wrong I actually kind of like the idea behind this device it's just that not including a controller and memory card in the package really takes away from the $99 price.  The key difference between this and competitors like Roku and Apple TV are the games and without the previously mentioned items packed in it will very likely just be an outclassed media player out of the box.

As for the DS3 it really just seems like it's adding to Vita's already huge list of problems as it splits the userbase in terms of the touch pad.  Why didn't they just have the new Vita model come without a touch pad if they were planning on having this device?
