I think the diifference between the Wii U situation and the Vita situation is lineup.

According to Gamefaqs, which admittedly sticks to retail titles with certain dates, the Vita has 9 games coming between now and December in North America. The Wii U has 26, nearly thrice as many. And that's just the immediate future. The Vita has no Mario Kart 8 or Super Smash Bros 4 over the horizon.

At this point, the Vita's best bet is to actually become the 3DS's cheaper alternative for the hardcore. Basically, for only $30 than a 3DS, you get a system with a bunch of indie games and PS Plus.
