Most kids have a either a Wii/360/PS3 already ... no need to buy an entirely different and much more expensive system just to play this game.

Skylanders didn't sell all that great on the Wii U.

The Wii was not going to survive for 3 years on its own as is, what Nintendo should have done IMO is released a Wii HD in 2010 or 2011 alongside either DKCR or Zelda: SS and sold it for a budget price of $149.99 with 720p capability for newer games (overclocked CPU/GPU + more RAM) and a better eShop/main interface, ala the DSi > DS upgrade.

Wii should've remained a brand centered around motion gaming/the Wiimote and low cost entry gaming/casual/kid market.

The "Wii U" should've just been rebranded as a more traditional Nintendo console (I like the sound of "New Nintendo Entertainment System") and been more powerful than the PS3/360 by a large margin and competed more for core gamers.

They could've sold both for several more years.
