I think any company who owns trademarks and wants to keep them has a policy of defending them. There are two things a trademark holder must do to maintain their trademarks: register them at least once every 5 years, and defend them from infringement. If the holder doesn't defend their trademarks, they lose the rights to them. 

So if Nintendo didn't defend the Metroid trademark, they would lose the Metroid trademark.
