Actually I typoed.  I meant to say 2013/2014 would be the best years on WiiU with a new system coming out 2016.  While I do expect it to mostly match up with P4/XB1 I also expect some Nintendo magic (Wii/DS kind not 3DS/WiiU kind) to really set it apart from the other consoles.  The fact that it (can) have huge mass market appeal AND port over all games pretty much perfectly will make it a very compelling system.

Just because it could run ports doesn't mean it will get them. The Wii U should still be fresh in your memory: A system that was built to get the ports, but didn't get most of them. Decisions that were made by third parties before the Wii U launched. If third parties aren't going to support Nintendo during a generational transition where everyone's installed base resets to zero, then what hope is there that third parties will support a Nintendo console that starts with an installed base of zero while the PS4 and X1 are in full swing?

It's true ports are not guaranteed.  But where Nintendo would have an advantage is in being able to once again zig where the others have zagged.  With WiiU we know Nintendo decided to mostly follow the course set by others, and we know that never works well for them.  They can't compete with Sony/MS by being another high-powered console.  They can't compete with mobile by adding a touch screen.  Nintendo does best when it's doing it's own unique thing.

With a system launching in 2016, still early in this new gen of consoles (which should go until 2020/2021) they can cost effectively come out with a similarly powered machine, at a good price which offers gameplay the others (including mobile) don't and simply can't without having to totally redo their modus operandi.    If Nintendo manages it well, like DS and Wii, they can have another massive hit and with ports being butt easy to put on Wii3 or whatever, why wouldn't anyone do it?   Some won't but most will because it'll be easy money even if their games still sell better on PS4/XB1.

Besides which, Wii had MASSIVE 3rd party support.  Over 4000 games launched on Wii.  While we wouldn't play 90% of them (and most 'core' gamers more like 99%) fact is many of them sold very well.   There are also more game developers than ever before in history thanks to mobile.  Will mobile dev come to Wii3?  If a similar audience exists on Wii3 as did Wii, YES because they will do well on that platform.   Look at Angry Birds success on 3DS for evidence of this.

I realize this isn't what most Nintendo fans want, but Nintendo needs more Wii's and DS's and less WiiU's/GC's.  And a healthy strong Nintendo is a plus for all Nintendo fans and the gaming community at large (even if 'core' gamers won't care for it, or maybe they will, depending on what innovation Wii3 brings to the table).

Now will any of this happens?  Lord knows.  I totally got Nintendo in 2006-2011.  After that I don't understand WTF they were thinking with 3DS and WiiU.  3DS is doing well, but it's obvious they made a slew of poor decisions before saving it with price cuts/games and it's still no DS.  WiiU needs no explanation.   If they return to their 'blue ocean' strategy then they might have a chance of regaining their former glory again.  If they instead insist on pandering to what they think Nintendo fans want and 3rd parties want then it'll just be another missed opportunity and they'll really weaked themselves and likely become a delicious prospect for buyout by some huge Chinese mobile gaming company who'd realize immediate millions by placing Nintendo IPs on mobile on competing platforms.    Or they can just continue to try to prop up the WiiU for five more years with limited success and face the same prospect.
