Classic Mario doesn't need 3D either. What works in 2D doesn't look like it works so well in 3D, in my view.

Have you played Super Mario 3D land?  The game is excellent, and contains one of the most difficult platforming challenges (the last secret level) I have ever experienced, rivaling even some of the most notoriously difficult games of the NES era.

I have played it, and while it is a good game, I don't think it's approach lives up to either the best of 2D Mario, or Mario 64/Galaxy/Galaxy 2.
