.........it was cheaper speciacally BECAUSE it didn't have a regular DVD player. The DVD part is what made PS2 more expensive, hands down.

Except it was basically a DVD drive, just modified slightly so Nintendo did not have to pay a $10/unit DVD licensing fee (which MS got around on the XBox by selling a remote control accessory).

I remember seeing pirated copies of GameCube games that were burned onto mini-DVD discs (the actual DVD format, just a smaller version of it), so it definitely could read DVDs.
