I wanted something 'new', Galaxy felt fresh when compared to Sunshine, and Sunshine felt fresh when compared to Mario 64, and I´m not getting that vibe from 3D World. The feeling gets worse because it´ll be the second Wii U Mario game that feels more like an expansion than a fresh experience..NSMBU let me down because of how similar it feels to NSMB Wii, they reused so many assets it left a 'meh' feeling as far as I´m concerned.I was let down because where was the Nintendo that made SMB, SMB2, SMB3 and SMBW so different from one another (different music, different worlds, etc..)?...despite the very good platforming and level design in NSMBU, I couldn´t help but get a "they´re being lazy" feeling...and now I´m wondering if I´m getting the same feeling with this new Mario game, which would make it twice in a row. Of course, I´m speaking for myself, and I´m not asking you to agree with me, I just want to know if you can see where I´m coming from. |
Well it's certainly interesting to see how the fans were reacting when we heard that we'd see the new 3D Mario game for the E3 Nintendo Direct. At that point we had the two camps per se: the open world big playground style of 64 and Sunshine (Super Mario Universe!), and the linear, focused "platform rollercoaster" that were the Galaxy games (Super Mario Galaxy 3!). At that point I think the most vocal group was that clamoring for the open world concept, since we just finished the more linear Galaxy's on the Wii.
So either way, both camps came away disappointed when they showed off the "inbetween" inspired 3D World (2D style "reach the flagpole" linearity yet open enough to still explore and find beneficial secrets). In all honesty, a continuation makes sense, despite fans seeing 3D Land as a sort of "portable 3D Mario". I mean, seeing as we've had two games for each style thus far (64/Sunshine, Galaxy/2, and now 3D Land/World), it was in front of our noses that we'd see EAD Tokyo take the elements from the first and expand upon them in a big way.
Yeah, there's certain elements of 3D Land's design that I hope they improve on (the easy difficulty and each level's length, among others), but as a fan I'm pretty excited to see EAD Tokyo take an already great concept and polish it down to perfection (like they did with Galaxy 2). I can totally understand (and even relate to) your opinion on the matter, but at the same time I'm totally stoked for this game.
