just out of curiosity when did Ninty push anyone forward? Outside of the WIi and DS and even then those two especially WIi was FAR behind the other consoles in just about every other department. This innovation speak is funny because it seems like people forget everything prior to WIi those were all just upgraded machines. And no one complained. if we take out the hardware upgrades these companies played safe just about all of the time. PS brought the DVD format to consoles, MS bought online to consoles sucessfully; keyword sucessfully. 


You are focusing to much on hardware, online and such. What Nintendo did with the Wii (and this is coming from a huge SEGA fan) was to broaden the gaming market so that more people could enjoy gaming. What the DS did was to introduce new and unique ways of controlling the games, long before we had smartphone gaming. These are important contributions and the console manufacturers need to take these risks in order to push the industry forward.
