The fact that Nintendo actually has to come out and comment on something like this gives you an idea of how much of a reality Nintendo going 3rd party in the not too distant future actually is.
In the past this idea would have been dismissed as an incredibly lame April Fool's joke. The fact that it actually has traction with people in the industry and that Nintendo felt the need to comment on it speaks volumes.
