Skyward Sword's controls  were the biggest innovation for the series since the move to 3D in 1998.

Comparatively yes, but not when you consider that the use of the Wii mote by that point was very familiar. When I say innovate the series, I mean give gamers an experience they hadn't previously had. I'm not calling the game bad, I enjoyed what I played of it, I’m just saying the criticism was well placed.

The Wiimote was familiar but Motion Plus hadn't been used much in a traditional genre.

Motion Plus was just an upgrade to the Wii mote, it didn't supply a "new" experience outside of being better refined. That would be like saying [insert game name] is innovative because it has better graphics than the last.

Can't do Skyward Sword's swordplay with a standard Wiimote though, the precision is on another level. And gameplay is infinitely more important than graphics.
