You are allowed to leave her behind. I don't think anyone manages to unite the two characters within one day on their first playthrough. Brittany will stay with the yellow Pikmin in the cave, it's not like she hasn't survived a night on the planet before.

Also, if the game is making you angry, you are probably approaching it with all the wrong expectations.

Likely i'm trying to be too perfectionist, focused on doing everything in the time limit while not understanding what can even be accomplished in that time frame.

Should just focus on getting fruit and letting the other stuff sort itself...
