Why? He was horrible for PR, which is why he didn't do it. He deserves much respect for his place in Nintendo history. But the fact of the matter is, the guy was a well known jerk at times too. Iwata is 100% better as a Nintendo head than he was, not leastwise because Iwata actually made games and understand the industry.
