You can certainly play with IR when using gamepad in off screen mode. I used it to throw Pikmin on the Gamepad. The touch screen buttons stay on the pad and use can use them to call up map and info as normal. Not sure if you can point at map when using both screens.

Too cool. It would be amazing if they made a GamePad 2.0 with bigger screen, battery life, and better signaling radius so you won't even have to use the TV. but a power cord to turn on the Wii U.
