Why the binary option for gender on profiles?

I don't get it.

If you're male, you're male.  If you're female, you're female.  If you're transgender (pre-op or post-op), you're the gender you identify with.  For hermaphrodites or ambiguiously genedered persons, I'd say select the gender you identify with.
