Yup on your design menu you have up to 8 canvases which have designs on them you can erase and overdraw over them. Also Able allows you to save more designs. and create pro designs which allow you to add designs to the sides and back so creating a shirt/clothing.
The QR machine needs to be unlocked, alot of things in AC need to be unlocked ie like in RPG's you have to do a lot of talking and quests for people and in turn you should be rewarded.
