Well, at first it was a real opaque choice: I was simply given the flavor options with no indication of the game consequences. When I complained about that he told me that one choice would turn me to scum, and the other choice would do something else (presumably good for town) and the final choice of "do nothing" would mean no change in the game but have drastic effects on flavor. After that, even though I didn't get the result I wanted, I don't think it was too unreasonable, since I had the option of chickening out. As long as I had a true choice and not something silly like he would flip a coin and make up reasoning to explain why my choice was good/evil no matter what it was.
