ACtually that statement has some truth.

The original Street Fighter was not a "Fighting Game" since there was no such genre, it was a action game. The genre eventually grew out of Street Fighter 2 but for the most part the original Street Fighter was just a arcade game where you played Ryu and went from one fight/stage to another. It had a versus mode but so did other side scrollers and action games, Street Fighter's main claim at the time of the original was pressure sensative buttons for different levels or punches and kicks along with "secret" special moves like the Hurricane Kick and Fireball.


That's only through a technicality, and even with  the first "fighting game" as you would call it, it still doesn't prove anything at all about his claim where a fighting game gets more hype as it gets older.  

The proof is right here. This was the biggest year yet for street fighter,marvel,Kof, and smash. More people join in. More techniques developed. More hype.
