I think you got that backwards non technically minded people see graphics in a much shallower way, they only apreciate graphics on a surface level without apreciating the details of how it looks the way it does and why. A technically minded person apreciates a pretty image the same as anyone (aesthetic differences aside), but they also understand the work that goes into creating the image which adds a whole new depth to their appreciation.

I don't know why I read these threads anymore

No. non-technically minded people just see the whole picture and appreciate graphics as they are.

Technical whores look for flaws to bitch about.

That would be like someone with no knowledge of art or painting saying they prefer painting A to painting B when they have no knowledge of why either paining look good or the work that's gone into either whilst ignoring the views of expert artists.

Whilst it may look like technical minded people look for flaws it's the exact opposite. Technical minds know the limitations that hardware presents so when a developer manages to overcome major technical and graphical barriers on limited hardware the appreciation is all the greater. It's why technically minded people will appreciate Super Mario Galaxy, Shadow of the Colossus or The Last of Us for what each game achieves both artistically and technically on their respective platform. It's also why they accept that more powerful, feature-rich hardware will give the tools that developers need to show off their artistic mindsand truly express themselves.

Their appreciation is much deeper than those who just look at the simplest of levels.
