Basically every iPod that doesn't run iOS can do this since the original iPod (of course it was a FireWire drive since USB 2.0 wasn't ready for primetime yet).  In 2001 it was the cheapest external 1.8" hard drive you could buy, and I read of people using them as boot devices for setting up server farms.

Of course this doesn't mean it will work with the Wii U.  If I had access to my Wii U right now I'd try it out with an old shuffle.
