In a way, they had been working on stuff like it - and bought a different company than PrimeSince which did the original Kinect 1.0. They bought Canesta, a 3D CMOS chip manufacture (I do not know if those chips are in Kinect 2.0 for the X1.) For a flagship game on the original Xbox - Bungie. For voice recognition- they bought out the 'Tell Me' network. For video conferencing – Skype, etc.
Plus, with the accidental death of Dean Putney, one of the Occulus Riff's founders, last month. It might be a good thing, so they can back it and make sure it works. Incidently, I believe Riff said they recently had a big infusion of cash.
