Jeese, people are douches. Nothing can be discussed politely or intelligently without trying to make crass generalizations, or slamming one side of the console aisle or the other. Very few questions have been answered or even seriously attempted to be answered (thank you for the handful of responses that didn't involve "lol this such and such system sucks, and it's fans do too!"
Apparently "niche" is becoming anything that doesn't have men with guns, or perhaps men with swords on occasion. What is wrong with a game like boom blox except for "lolz wheres teh gunz??" It's an innovative physics based puzzle game with dynamic character AI and the ability to create, trade, and download new levels. But no gunz=for teh casualz=nobody cares. Kings Story (project 0) is bashed by people that don't even know anything about it. It's got an all star teamof developers working on it, and it's a unique strategy/RTS/RPG/city building sim. But the main character is a kid that has a conspicuous lack of gun=teh niche=nobody cares. De Blob is an innovative open world action game with an incredible art style and good use of the wii's motion control and seems reminiscent of artsy game of old "Jet Set Radio", but it's about a blob of paint that seems to have neither guns nor sword, and doesn't appear to be killing anything so de blob=teh kidiiez=no one cares.
I think a large part of the lack of hype is the conditioning the "hardcore" crowd has undergone. The only games worth paying attention to all involve tough guys with guns or swords, and must be beautiful. Niche titles are 90% of game styles and genres. Is it possible that the lack of hype is due to the intollerance of the so called "hardcore" crowd? Magazines, and websites are just pandering to the tastes of those that just want another military shooter, or God Of War style bad ass? And that something "niche" like King's Story just doesn't generate hits, or purchases?
I'm starting to believe that this is the case. The fact that so many PS3 or 360 owners can look at that list of third party titles and see nothing but niche crap strongly supports that theory.
