"The Wii's success is too obvious, and it explains why the NES, SNES, N64, NGC, and (most likely) Wii-U, were nowhere near as successful."
On second thought, NES success was very similar to Wii success, with a completely new type of controller, with very accessible games like ROB games Stack-Up and Gyromite, Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt which was far more simple than Wii Sports or Wii fit. Nintendo DS success is more or less of the same ilk. Nintendo 3DS and WiiU are succeeding Nintendo DS and Wii like SNES was succeeding NES. SNES had modest launch line-up and had to face SEGA's very harsh competition with the Megadrive, furthermore SNES had to compete with NES for the beginners public, which was a cheaper deal. In addition to that Nintendo 3DS and WiiU will have to cope with Internet turn point during their life cycle, like any eighth Gen console.
"That window of oppurtunity was pretty much a once in a lifetime thing, and Nintendo knew this. It's why they're attempting to go back to appealing to the hard core audience with the Wii-U"
NES public did not mechanically uprgrade to SNES, it took some time and a part of it migrated on SEGA Megadrive. But finally
SNES took the leadership. It is too early to drawing conclusions.
"Unfortunately the hard core audience doesn't agree with Miyamoto."
In fourth generation beginnings significant part of SEGA hard core audience did not agree at all with Shigeru Miyamoto...
