Dead Space did well for itself.

It sold alright, I wouldnt say it did "well" though, especially Dead Space 3.

Dead Space did 3+ millon. DS2 did 2.5+. DS3 is just over 1.2 million. Certainly better than just alright.

Most other titles in this genre are smaller indie titles like Slender and Amenesia.

Why is there no Dead Space 4 in development?

I don't see how that's relevant, but I'll answer anyway.

Dead Space is having two problems: 1. Identity criss and 2. Franchise fatigue from frequent releases.

Dead Space isn't dead as a franchise and it will be brought back just like Mirror's Edge was. Taking a break doesn't mean it was an awful failure that will be buried forever. Getting away from the 1-2 year sequels is a good thing for the industry, imo. We're too dependent on blockbusters.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."
