The Wii U is basically patterned after the same hardware formula as the first Wii, Nintendo probably even made a checklist.

- Sell the system around a new type of controller: Check.

- Moderate hardware upgrade to existing consoles: Check (Wii was similar to the XBox/GCN/PS2)

- Emphasis on small system casing and low power consumption: Check

- Main launch game is a mini-game compliation: Check (Wii Sports -- Nintendo Land)

- Core Nintendo IP for Nintendo fans (Zelda: TP -- New Super Mario Bros. U)

The only thing is lightning hasn't struck twice for Nintendo and a lot of their bets this time have not taken off (ie: Nintendo Land).

But I think they were going to chase the exact same formula again, no matter if it didn't make as much logical sense. It worked once, and Nintendo was going to bang its head on the wall and try it again.
