The system should of had
1) a different name to make it obvious it was a new console.. wii 2 would have been soooo much better than wiiu.
2) better initial commercials as the ones they ran were confusing and didn't seem fun
3) focus big time on off screen play .. not asymmetric play. That is the bigger selling point.

The balance board sold very well for a $90 accessory all due to wii fit. People will jump on if the right content is shown with it.

I really don't see the big deal with off-TV play either. I mean it's tethered to the console, meaning in most homes you'd can't go into a different room to use it. So if you're using it, why play on a low-res, blurry 5-inch screen when you have a nice high resolution big TV to play on in the same room.

And as much as Nintendo tries to sell the whole "you can play on the controller while the family watches TV!", it's kinda rude to be in a room of people totally disconnected from what they're watching/doing while your face is buried in a game handheld, lol. I just find it to be pretty impractical.

And most US households have multiple TVs, so having to "share" one TV isn't really some big dilemma. I think the whole console concept was made more for Japan, but it's actually probably selling worse in Japan than anywhere else, Japan is all about true handhelds now.
