The Last of Us >100k next week??

Nah I say most probably the other way around The Last of Us <100k.

Japanese gamers just do not embrace anything the is not japanese. No matter the quality.

Uncharted 3 launched in Japan with ~120k units.

Yeah, I'm not saying a non Japanese game cannot open higher than 100k, I just said TLoU won't in my opinion.

And well the second sentence is still valid, since U3 only sold 200k there LTD. It's peanuts in the overall sales of this game. There are games that sold even more, but it's always a small fraction of the overall sales: GTA IV sold 550k in Japan, that's big, but not anymore when the game sold 20m on consoles.

More examples: You have LBP selling 120k there, from a game that cannot be labeled culturally.

Ratchet & Clank ToD: 80k

God of War 3: 120k from aprox. 5m, compared to 180k sold DMCs, published by Capcom (GoW also way more critically acclaimed)

Resident Evil 6 sold here 650k first week, a game that was slammed for being very "westernised", cattering to the CoD gamer, even Capcom themselves said that, so Japanese gamers should ignore it. But they didn't, cause it's a japanese game. It also got mixed reviews. TLoU reviews are stellar. First week sales will be comparable, aprox 1,3m. And we'll be seing less than 1/6th of the sales.

But that 550k is more than most games. The Japanese market is much smaller than the US market, and getting 6 figures is impressive. A title breaking half a million is very good, especially for a Western IP. Just a little over 100 titles break 100k in a year.

Go and look back at sales of the games, and you'll see that good Western games sitll do well. This is despite the fact that they rarely feature good localizations and there is very little if any marketing for the game (remind anyone of a common trait with Japanese games in the West). You'll also find that only ~125 games even break 100k in a year.

Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
